Rowan Van Ness

This concept is similar to an anecdote Craig Lambert wrote about in "Mind Over Water: Lessons on Life From the Art of Rowing." He discusses playing a challenging piece of music on the piano and consistently replicating the same error. He kept practicing the piece and continued struggling wtih the error. Finally, he stepped back and slowed the tempo and realized what was causing the error--an alternate fingering that was making it really awkward to hit the correct note that followed. He corrected the fingering and played the passage flawlessly. He finally concludes, "Repitition is not enough: practice alone does not make perfect. I could have spent another hour repeating that passage without getting anywhere. What made a difference was shifting the quality of my attention to the task. First, I stopped wallowing in frustration and second-guessing myself. Then, by slowing down, I started to notice what I was actually doing; instead of spinning my wheels, mired in teh repeating patterns of my mind, I switched to an external focus. This opened a window to sunlight that illumined a path to success."
